WILD GIRL by Patricia Reilly Giff
This story is narrated by 2 special characters. One part is told by a 12 year old girl named Lidie who is leaving Brazil to join her brother and father on a racehorse ranch in New York. The second part is told by a new-born foal born on a farm far away from the race track. Both Lidie and the foal have a hard time with their new life, but finally meet at the racehorse ranch. Will Lidie convince her father and brother that she is not the little girl they left behind? Will she be able to show them that she is a strong rider who doesn’t need lessons from her brother? Can she befriend the new foal that is destined to be a great racehorse? A great story for horse lovers!

And so the story begins for Hap Barlo, the shoemaker’s helper. He finds himself stuck in the middle of the disappearance of the shoe, being called a thief and sent off to Mount Xexnax, from which no one has ever returned! Find out what happens on that mountain and how the shoe will play an important part.

Is this what it's like to be a student today?

I went to the NELA conference and saw this video.  It really got me thinking about what it's like to be in school nowadays (mostly because I shudder to remember what it was like when I was there, not that long ago).  Check it out:

What do you think of this?  Do you feel like you have a whole world of problems waiting for you that school hasn't even slightly prepared you for?

There are new books on the shelf here, from Zombies vs. Unicorns, edited by Holly Black, to the new Scott Westerfeld sequel to Leviathan, Behemoth.  Come check them out.

Ch-ch-ch-changes.

Hey teens,

The TAB meeting for tomorrow is going to be moved to sometime later this month.  I'd like to put out more word and gauge some interest levels first.  Then I'll set up a meeting time (which will probably still be on a Saturday afternoon) and hopefully you can still make it.

I promise I haven't forgotten about you and I *will* make up for this.

Thanks,

Ellen

Teen Voices and Read This.

Do you have a pen, pencil, blackberry, droid or iPhone?  Get it/them out right now and put October 2nd at 3:30 in your calendar.  That's the date for the first TAB (teen advisory board) meeting.  We're starting fresh, looking for new people and ideas, and ready to get started.  Come tell us what you think the library needs to offer for teens.  Meet new people, eat free food, and help the library help you.  You can even earn community service hours for helping us.  I mean, really, how can you NOT come in now?

In the meantime, here's what I've been reading.  Check them out.

Incarceron by Catherine Fisher

This is the story of Finn, a prisoner who can't remember anything about his life before prison, and Claudia, the warden's daughter.  Incarceron is literally a living prison, and trying to escape it is more dangerous than trying to survive in it.  Finn is willing to risk it to get out.  Claudia is willing to risk everything to escape her arranged marriage, and the only way she can do that is to get into the prison.  Enter a pair of strange keys that allow Finn and Claudia to communicate and help each other out.  This book will keep you turning the pages just out of sheer curiosity to find out what happens to both of the characters, especially when they finally meet in person.  A great read, especially if you're a fan of Garth Nix or Suzanne Collins.

The Van Alen Legacy by Melissa de la Cruz

This is the fourth book in the Blue Bloods series, and it is action-packed.  We now know Bliss's true identity, and watch as she figures out what she can and can't do with the "visitor" around.  Schuyler and Oliver are on the run, but Jack catches up to them.  Does he beat the silver bloods to it?  Now Kingsley and Mimi are working side by side trying to find Jordan.  Does anyone find romance?  Or will the Blue Bloods continue to be in constant danger.  Or both?  This book has so much going on, and I can't share more or give anything away.  Give it a read and find out for yourself.

And don't forget to come to the library October 2nd at 3:30!
